Clayton Transition Announcement
The Town of Clayton has announced that its library, the Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, will be leaving the Johnston County affiliated library system effective June 1, 2015.
To make this transition as smooth as possible for all patrons, the libraries have mutually agreed to discontinue the transfer of books and other materials between Clayton and the Johnston County affiliated library branches on April 1, 2015.
If you currently have an active library card issued by any of Johnston County’s public libraries (including Clayton) beginning with the numbers 2895, rest assured that it will continue to work in any of the remaining Johnston County affiliated library locations including Benson, Four Oaks, Kenly, Princeton, Selma, and Smithfield. You will also continue to be able to access our online resources including eBooks through our 3M Cloud Library and NC Live. Simply stated, we will continue to serve all Johnston County residents regardless of their address.
Please note that if you have a Johnston County Library System card with Clayton set as your home branch, you will be reassigned to one of the other remaining libraries based on the zip code we have on file for you. Should you wish to choose a specific library, please just let us know, and we will honor your request.
For more details about this transition, please visit your local library.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have both a Johnston County Library System and a Clayton Library card?
Yes. We encourage you to use all resources available to you.
Will I need to get a new card for the Clayton Library?
Yes. You will need to get a new, separate card if you plan to continue using the Clayton Library. We do not know when Clayton plans to begin issuing their new cards, nor the specifics of who is eligible for one at this time.
Will I need to get a new Johnston County Library System card?
No. If you have an existing card (even if it was issued at Clayton) that begins with 2895, your card will remain valid. If your card bears the Clayton logo, we will replace it at no cost to you the next time you come into the library.
I usually pick up my held books in Clayton. Where will I pick them up after April 1st?
If your pickup library is currently set to Clayton, and we have held items that become available for you, we will make every effort to contact you to see where you want to pick them up.
Why is this happening?
The Clayton Town Council made the decision to withdraw from our affiliated system and become an independent municipal library.
Will Clayton books still show up in the Johnston County catalog?
Initially, yes. However, once the transition is complete, Clayton will have their own separate catalog.
